A clean, properly oiled air filter helps protect your engine from dust, dirt and debris. On a dirt bike, this is one of the most important maintenance jobs you can do. If the filter is dirty, damaged or dry, harmful particles can get into the engine and cause premature wear.
This step-by-step guide explains how to clean and lube your dirt bike air filter properly.
What You Will Need:
• Air filter cleaner or a suitable cleaning solution
• Air filter oil
• Gloves
• Clean rags
• A bucket or wash container
• A plastic bag for oiling the filter
• Grease for the airbox sealing surface if required
Step 1: Remove the Air Filter
Start by gaining access to the airbox, the location of your airbox can vary depending on your bike model. Carefully take the air filter out of the airbox. Check how it is fitted before removing it so it is easy to reinstall correctly.
Place a clean rag in the intake opening straight away to stop dirt from falling into the engine.
Step 2: Inspect the Filter
Before cleaning, inspect the filter for tears, crumbling foam, loose glue joints or any signs of damage. If the filter is worn out or damaged, replace it rather than reusing it.
Also inspect the airbox for dust, sand or mud and wipe it clean before reinstalling the filter later.
Step 3: Clean the Filter
Use a proper air filter cleaner and gently work it through the foam. Avoid twisting or wringing the filter aggressively, as this can damage the foam and seams.
Rinse or wash the filter as directed by the cleaner product instructions until all dirt and old oil are removed. Repeat if necessary for heavily soiled filters.

Step 4: Let the Filter Dry Completely
Allow the filter to dry naturally in a clean area. Do not use direct heat, compressed air or excessive sunlight, as this can damage the foam.
The filter must be fully dry before applying fresh oil.
Step 5: Apply Air Filter Oil
Pour air filter oil onto the filter or place the filter in a plastic bag with the oil. Work the oil evenly through the entire filter until all foam surfaces are coated.
Make sure the filter is fully covered, but not dripping excessively. An even coating is what traps fine dust effectively.

Step 6: Remove Excess Oil
Gently squeeze out any excess oil using your hands. Do not wring the filter. The filter should feel tacky and evenly coated, not saturated to the point of dripping.

Step 7: Clean the Airbox and Refit the Filter
Before reinstalling, wipe out the airbox again if needed. Check the filter cage and mounting hardware are clean and secure.
Apply a light bead of grease around the sealing edge of the filter if your bike manufacturer recommends it. Then reinstall the filter carefully, making sure it seats properly with no gaps.

Step 8: Reassemble and Double-Check
Refit the airbox cover and seat. Double-check that everything is secure before riding.
A poorly fitted air filter can let dust bypass the filter entirely, so this final check is important.
